An off-duty police officer who disarmed a knifeman has been commended by Sussex Police.
Sergeant Dave Bettiss was one of three Hove-based officers to receive the Chief Constable's Certificate of Merit.
Mr Bettiss was driving in Kemp Town, Brighton, on a Sunday evening in March when he spotted the man, who had just robbed a nearby off-licence.
He said: "I saw him running off down the road and assumed something had taken place. I followed him in my car at first, then on foot.
"As I tackled him, a quantity of cash fell to the ground as well as a 10in carving knife."
A member of the public called the police while Mr Bettiss, who has been with the Sussex force for 25 years, stopped the offender running off.
Sergeant Paul Furnell received a certificate for his work in the old Hove and Shoreham police division while PC Chris Sparks was honoured for running a training programme on tackling street crime.
The certificates were awarded for acts of bravery and work with the community.
