The Sussex 25-mile time trial championship at Steyning on Sunday has drawn the best quality field for some years.
Peacehaven rider Alan Curtis (In Gear) is not defending his CROWN but the club is still hoping to retain the individual and team titles.
Five times winner Steve Elms heads a strong team of Dave Pollard, Jon Sharples, and former champion Shane Faulkner.
Other seeded riders include Steve Woodbridge and John Limpus (GS Stella), Steve Lenn (Bognor Regis), Mike Coyle (VC Etoile) and Steve Dennis (East Grinstead).
While the men's event has attracted an increased field, none of the leading women riders have entered their championship.
Liz Limber and Vicki Boyle, both of Lewes Wanderers, have been left to battle it out for the title.
Promoter Mel Roberton says he is puzzled by the poor response.
Evergreen Harry Featherstone (Eastbourne Rovers), 69, and former hill-climb star Don Awcock (Central Sussex), 54, are among the 36 contenders for the age-related veterans' championship.
The course starts north of Steyning and goes via Ashurst, Partridge Green, Washington roundabout and, Bramber, before turning at the Shoreham flyover and finishing on the Steyning bypass. The HQ is the Steyning Centre and the first rider starts at 7am.
The final races of the season at the Hove Park circuit were reduced to 20 minutes plus five laps due to failing light. Bryan Taylor (VC Londres) produced a powerful sprint to win the main event ahead of Keir Williams (Kingsworth) and Lee Day (Sport and Publicity).
The supporting race was won by Brighton Mitre's Toby Leyton from Paul Byford (Crawley Wheelers) and Dan Clark (Mitre).
Taylor has won the main series overall, with Mark Winton (Lewes Wanderers) second and Bruce Griffiths (VC Bayeux) third.
The third and fourth category series was won by Leyton, with Clark second and Byford third.
Forest Row's Sean Yates (Team Clean) clocked 49min. 25sec in the West London CA's 25 and still ended up in second place. The event was won by Northern Ireland superstar Michael Hutchinson (MDT) who recorded 47min 26sec.
