A cyclist was hurt in a collision with a police car answering an emergency call.

The crash happened on the Kingsway in Hove, near the King Alfred Leisure Centre.

The cyclist fell to the floor during the collision, which happened when the police vehicle was attending an emergency call and had its lights and sirens working.

One witness, who did not want to be named, told The Argus: "I was driving from Worthing towards Brighton and I saw a police car coming the other way at what must have been 70 mph.

"The police car's lights were going but I can't recall if the sirens were.

"Then a police van came past at the same speed, then another car. I then heard this bang.

"I went back and a cyclist was on the floor being attended to by a WPC. The front of the police car had completely caved in.

"Fortunately the cyclist was alive and seemed conscious. There was also a trainee doctor on the scene who said it was a miracle the cyclist was not killed."

The witness said he gave a statement to the police.

A police spokesman said: "There was an accident involving a police car. It was the third car in a group and had its lights and wailers going."

He said the cyclist was not seriously injured during the incident, which happened at 10.45pm on Friday. No further details have been released.
