Sven-Goran Eriksson today brought Leeds duo Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer into the England fold just under three years after they were originally suspended from international duty.
Woodgate, who has represented his country once before against Bulgaria in June 1999, was cleared for selection at the start of this season after serving his 100-hour community service sentence for affray.
Bowyer, meanwhile, was cleared of all legal charges but was not previously picked by Eriksson for footballing reasons until the squad to face Portugal at Villa Park on Saturday was named today. They were joined by Elland Road team-mates Paul Robinson, Alan Smith and Danny Mills, although Nigel Martyn has been dropped.
The omissions of Martin Keown and Teddy Sheringham appears to indicate the end of their international careers.
Over the weekend, Eriksson lost the services of Sol Campbell and Darius Vassell due to injury.
Eriksson has not picked David Seaman even though he gave a strong indication only three days earlier that he would select the veteran Arsenal keeper.
England squad: James (West Ham), Robinson (Leeds); Mills (Leeds), Ashley Cole (Arsenal), Bridge (Southampton), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Southgate (Middlesbrough), Woodgate (Leeds); Beckham (Man Utd), Butt (Man Utd), Dyer (Newcastle), Sinclair (West Ham), Murphy (Liverpool), Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Bowyer (Leeds), J Cole (West Ham), Owen (Liverpool), Heskey (Liverpool), Smith (Leeds).
Albion striker Bobby Zamora, sidelined from the last three matches with a knee ligament strain, has not been named in the England under-21 squad for Friday's friendly against Yugoslavia at Bolton.
