A young graduate remained critically ill today as he fights for life after being found in a road with head injuries.
Friends and family maintained a vigil beside Daniel May's hospital bed at the weekend as his condition showed no improvement.
Mr May, 23, sustained serious head injuries as he walked home after spending a quiet evening in a pub with friends.
He was later found unconscious on the A265 Burwash Road in Heathfield at 11.15pm on Sunday, August 25, after visiting the nearby Crown pub in the same road.
Police are still unsure how he received his injuries but are investigating whether they were caused by a hit-and-run driver or by an attacker.
He was taken to the Kent and Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, but later transferred to the Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre in Haywards Heath.
A hospital spokesman said today: "Mr May remains critical but stable in the intensive care unit. His condition shows no change."
Mr May, of Longview, Heathfield, had just graduated from Southampton University this summer with a 2:1 degree in business management.
Friends cannot believe anyone would harm him, saying he is one of the most amiable people they have met.
Andy Sands, 23, who attended Heathfield Community College with Mr May, said: "He's a truly lovely guy. He's in the best possible hands so we are confident he'll be all right."
Police are anxious to trace the occupant of a car who stopped to help Mr May but left without giving his details.
