Southwick earned a precious away win despite being on the wrong end of a goalkeeping super show last night.
Chris Shappveld volleyed the fifth minute winner as Sammy Donnelly's men won 1-0 at Horsham YMCA to leapfrog them into second place in division one of the Matthew Clark League.
It needed a wicked deflection to beat home keeper Jason Dumbrill, who later saved a Mark Burt penalty and made even better stops from volleys by Paul Ettridge and Ben Milford.
Jamie Ash chipped against the post while YM struggled to trouble a defence in which Stuart Garrod impressed.
Gil Taylor looked the host's best bet and his second half volley dipped just over from 30 yards.
Donnelly said: "Our work rate was tremendous but I will leave it up to other people to say whether we are title contenders."
Round-Up
Hailsham Town claimed their first win under Brian Dennis with a 4-1 success at Peacehaven thanks to goals from Stuart Lewis, Ross Southwood, Danny Brown and Scott French. Paul Boxall hit the lone reply.
Luke Flomo scored a hat-trick as Hassocks won 5-3 at Redhill.
Tommy Pattenden netted the only goal as Whitehawk beat Shoreham 1-0.
