Will House ended his Sussex career with a flourish as the county pulled off only their fourth National League win of the season last night.

The 26-year-old all-rounder announced his retirement before the start of the game against Hampshire after three years at Hove and then hit the winning runs with a six as Sussex cruised to a seven wicket victory to lift themselves off the bottom of the second division.

House, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is to start a new career with a sports insurance company in London.

He said: "I've had three great years here, but I think it's now time to move on.

"If I had been playing regularly in both forms of cricket I would probably have carried on, but I think I've only played eight Championship games in six years as a professional and that has been hugely frustrating and prompted my decision more than anything.

"It was a nice way to finish, to be able to bat at the end and hit the winning runs. I decided if the ball was in my slot it was going to go and that's what happened.

"I felt really relaxed and seemed to have a lot more energy. I think knowing I had made my decision took a lot of the pressure off."

Coach Peter Moores said: "It's always sad when someone decides to move on but I think Will feels he needs a new challenge and I'm sure he will be successful in whatever walk of life he chooses."
