Sussex Second XI were hit by a century from Damien Shirazi on the opening day of their final Championship match against Hampshire.

Shirazi took four hours in compiling exactly 100 as Hampshire made 334 at West End. In reply Sussex were 33-1.

There were 15 boundaries in Shirazi's 176-ball innings. He featured in a fifth wicket stand of 84 with Chris Benham who made 34, then dominated a half century last wicket stand with James Bruce (7) before falling to Paul Hutchison.

Jason Lewry, with 2-32 from 14 overs, was Sussex's most economical bowler and debutant Gary Gilder, a South African pace bowler, claimed the early wicket of Lawrence Prittipaul (28) in his return of 1-75 off 19 overs.

Sussex, with only two wins all season, received an early shock when Neil Turk was caught behind off Bruce for only a single with three scored. Dominic Clapp (12) and Richard Jackson (15) then saw their side through to stumps.
