Lewes are still flying but it took two second-half substitutions to earn their latest win.
Rooks remain second in division one south after a 3-1 success at hard-working Croydon.
They looked set to drop two points when boss Jimmy Quinn freshened things up with Andy Driscoll and Ross Venables.
Both were involved in the goals which clinch victory, helping stitch together attractive moves which were finished by Luke Gedling and Tony Reid.
Quinn said: "We played our best football of the afternoon after we had made the changes.
"Croydon have got a new manager and they worked really hard. They are a young side and were clearly playing for their places."
Reid won the race with the home goalkeeper to get to a through ball and edge Lewes ahead approaching the interval.
Croydon deservedly levelled after the break but Rooks were unhappy with the penalty verdict as a shot was smashed against Marc Cable's hand from close range.
Horsham became the first side to win at Tooting and Mitcham's impressive new Imperial Fields home as they scored a superb 4-1 win.
Like Lewes, they played their best stuff in the final 20 minutes after coming under some spirited home pressure.
Gary Charman's far post header gave Horsham the lead and Rob Collins made it two after the break.
Tooting then stormed forward and were rewarded when Elliott Onochie pulled a goal back from close range.
An awkward finale was headed off by strikes from Gavin Geddes and substitute James Grant, with Hornets boss John Maggs beaming: "We were awesome.
"This result tells me we are really gelling as a team and I just hope we can keep it going."
Bognor slipped out of the leading pack after a dismal 1-0 defeat at lowly Croydon Athletic.
Tony Quinton volleyed the only goal on just four minutes and team mate John Fowler drilled a penalty aginst a post just before the break.
Boss Jack Pearce was away at a wedding so his assistant Paul Holden took charge of the Bognor side.
The nearest his men came to levelling was two Matt Russell headers over the bar in the second period.
An ankle injury for David Birmingham just added to the Rocks' woes.
