Now we know we are not short-listed as a Capital of Culture (The Argus, October 30), I hope Brighton and Hove City Council can put its mind to the delivery of services and not seek another new campaign. Never mind the where else campaign - what else does it take for the Labour administration to concentrate on the way in which it spends council tax?
Why do we need external bodies to tell us we are a Capital of Culture or, for that matter, the Place to Be? Why is it necessary to form committees to discuss publicity to support these grandiose campaigns? Many of us have the confidence to believe we are already living in an attractive environment surrounded by culture without spending thousands of pounds of other people's money to have some quango confirm it.
Let the council concentrate on how it will get us out of the debt it has built up and deliver the quality services for which we pay our hard-earned cash.
A word of advice to those "bitterly disappointed" councillors - find another job.
-Coun Jenny Barnard-Langston, Brighton and Hove City Council
