For the first time, some of the best photos from The Argus archives have been brought together in one book covering the entire 20th Century.
There is no more faithful recorder of events which make up the daily life of a place than the local daily newspaper.
Its journalists listen, probe and ask then set down the facts to bring it all together.
Its photographers complement the words with pictures that freeze-frame events great and small, happy and sad, thoughtful and downright silly. All this completes a record which is there for all time.
Now The Argus has published a wonderful book of pictures covering the last century, featuring scenes from Brighton and Hove dating back to 1778.
Brighton Remembered contains more than 350 views of events in the resort in a beautifully-produced hardback.
The Argus has been faithfully recording events in Brighton since its foundation in 1880. Many thousands of pictures have been taken of events both big and small.
Photographer Skye Brackpool has researched 100 years of pictorial history in The Argus to find the most dramatic, poignant, beautiful and wistful photographs taken during that period.
Her work means that, for the first time, the best of these pictures have been brought together in one book.
Brighton Remembered covers each decade of the 20th Century, and some of the years before, to produce a record of what life was like.
Pictures range from those of the seafront in Victorian times and images of Edwardian elegances to the damage caused to Brighton in the Second World War.
There are also images of the fusty Fifties and the swinging Sixties all the way through to modern times.
Famous images of mods and rockers contrast with pictures of the Brighton Promettes and views of the beach when it was almost too crowded to move.
Brighton is portrayed in its summer glory, in gales that uprooted trees and in snowstorms that brought the resort skidding to a halt.
The pictures go all the way from Victorian times to ones many people will remember from the Nineties.
It is surprising how empty many of the streets were before most people had cars and how solemn people looked when posing for photographs.
There are pictures of royalty and many more of ordinary people at work or at play, strolling on the prom or attending football matches.
People are pictured soaking up the sun on Brighton beach or struggling through the snow.
Famous events such as the bombing of The Grand hotel in 1984 and the Great Storm three years later are there along with many more of ordinary but often nostalgic events.
Skye has spent many hours trawling through the archives and it is hard to imagine she could have come up with a better or more varied selection.
I contribute the Remember When? features in The Argus each Saturday and have written the introduction.
