Ian Davies got the improved Worthing performance he wanted but still saw his side lose top spot in London Two South.
Davies's men lost a 10-5 lead and went down 14-10 at struggling Effingham and Leatherhead.
The coach had been dissatisfied during his side's winning run and admitted: "Ironically we actually played better this time.
"The one thing we were still lacking was composure to take our chances. People were throwing out wild passes or trying drop goals when there was no need."
Worthing's pace advantage out wide was negated by the narrow pitch and they suffered a big blow when flanker Dave Davis departed with an ankle injury.
They should still have built on the first half lead given to them by quickfire tries from Adam Holloway and Steve Imrie.
A penalty dragged Effingham back to 10-8 at the break and they completed victory with a penalty and late drop goal.
Haywards Heath's home clash with Winchester in London One was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. They stay second after rivals Hertford suffered a shock 10-0 defeat at Harlow
