With the passing of time, many criminals who escaped the police net may well be sleeping comfortably in their beds - until now.
Advances in forensic science and DNA mean that police could still find their man many years later.
One of the most notorious unsolved mysteries in Brighton was the Lanes murder of 1965, in which Silvia Taylor was found strangled in an off licence she ran at Nile Street.
It was a vicious and brutal killing. Mrs Taylor was cashing up her takings for the day when the man came in to rob her. He probably strangled her to stop the screams.
Although this has always been a busy area of Brighton, there were no witnesses to the crime.
But there was evidence and this has been carefully preserved in Brighton for the last 37 years.
It was not possible all those years ago to link anyone positively with the murder but things could be different now.
Modern science means that samples invisible to the naked eye can be examined carefully.
It would be great if this killer could be found, convicted and jailed after all this time.
After that, there are several other unsolved murders of the Sixties which could bear further examination.
