Carl Stabler reflected on his first match back as Littlehampton boss and admitted his task is bigger than he thought.
The Marigolds lost 5-2 at Pagham and Stabler, appointed last Thursday, was not impressed with what he saw.
He said: "The standard was awful. It was very poor. We might have to go down and start from scratch. We have to get our principles right.
"At training last week we had five people turn up and they were all youth team players.
"The discipline is all wrong. At this level players have to train twice a week and turn up smart. Unfortunately, that isn't the case and we have got to get the discipline right.
"Our best three players on the park today were Ryan Gayler, who is 36, Alan Stoner, who is 45, and goalkeeper Micky Phillips, who is 42. They were the best players out there for me and that's because they have old standards."
Adie Miles scored twice for Pagham, with Brett Forden, Kevin Moore and an own goal completing the tally. Replies came from Jan Miller and James Thornton.
Two of Littlehampton's relegation rivals, Selsey and Peacehaven, both recorded wins.
Paul Lee hit a last minute winner as Selsey moved out of the bottom three with a 1-0 success at home to fellow strugglers Redhill.
Lee, who had earlier hit a post, turned a couple of defenders before rifling home the only goal of the game.
Selsey boss Danny Hinshelwood said: "We have games in hand but you have to win them. This was our first home win in the league this year, so let's hope we can take it on from here."
Peacehaven won 2-1 away to another struggling side, Wick.
Carl Lloyd opened the scoring with a powerful finish just before half time and Jon Donaghue doubled the lead with a terrific finish on 74 minutes. Lee Webber then pulled a goal back for the hosts to set up a tense finale.
Peacehaven boss Mick Maskell said: "This was a massive win for us. We changed the system a bit and worked really hard. We went with one up front and five across the midfield and everyone really dug in."
Ian Gilmour stood out for Peacehaven on his return to the club from Horsham YMCA.
