Blatchington Mill star Joe Evans has been named in the junior men's England squad.
The 6ft 4in player is delighted with his call-up and hopes to use it as a springboard to launch a career in America.
The ambitious 16-year-old wants to make it in the NBA where stars like Michael Jordan and Dennis Rodman made their names.
However, his first priority is to play well for his country and land a scholarship in the United States.
Evans said: "My best position is small forward or guard. I am pretty good at shooting and my defence is all right.
"Ultimately, I would like to be a professional in England or better still in the NBA. I know it might be beyond me but I shall give it my best shot."
Evans was put forward for England trials at Worcester College earlier this year by his coach Steve King at Blatchington Mill.
The basketball-mad teenager was thrilled when a letter landed on his doormat this month informing him he had made the grade.
He said: "I wasn't expecting to get in because I was the youngest person there."
The only problem for Evans is the complete lack of funding. England players have to raise between £1000-£1,500 to pay for the privilege of representing their country.
Joe's Mum Jenny said: "It is disgraceful. To play for your country is an honour and we are so proud of him. But to think he may not be able to because it's too expensive is shocking.
"If England want the best team you think they would do everything possible to ensure the players are picked on ability and not how much money they have."
