Phil Hamerton has been misinformed (Letters, December 13). The large cinema once near Hove station at the top of Denmark Villas did not open in
1948, nor was it always known as the Odeon.
Originally an ice rink, the building was acquired by County Cinemas Ltd and, after conversion in 1932, opened as the Lido cinema.
It had a Wurlitzer organ, an adjoining ballroom and cafe and a free car park.
In 1938, it was acquired by the Odeon circuit, when it was changed to Odeon. It was converted into a ten-pin bowling alley in 1961 and demolished in 1970.
