A man was taken to hospital with head injuries after he was attacked outside a bank.
The victim staggered 50 metres before collapsing on the pavement in Boundary Road, Hove, just before midnight on Friday.
Passers-by found the 34-year-old man, who has not been named, bleeding badly from a head wound.
He told police he had been attacked outside the Midland Bank but the incident is being treated as an assault rather than robbery.
He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where his head injury needed seven stitches.
