Evil acid bath murderer John George Haigh features in a top ten list of arrests by British police published today.

The killer, who dissolved his victims' bodies in sulphuric acid, ranks at number eight, rubbing shoulders with East End gangland leaders Reg and Ronnie Kray, Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe and serial sex killer John Christie.

The list was released to coincide with the 110th birthday of Police Review.

Haigh, who worked at a small goods factory in Leopold Road, Crawley, eventually confessed to killing nine people in Sussex and London, including two entire families.

The evil conman would befriend his victims and lure them to a back room in the factory where they were killed, robbed and their bodies dissolved.

Horsham CID officers who searched the factory found guns, jewellery and a dry cleaning ticket for a Persian lamb coat belonging to one of his victims, wealthy widow Olive Durand-Deacon.

Haigh confessed to the murder but was confident none of his victim's remains would be found. However, police discovered a set of gall stones, dentures and part of her purse which had survived the toxic treatment.

It took only 15 minutes for a jury to convict Haigh of murdering Olive. He was hanged on August 10 1949.

Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen - the first criminal to be arrested following an alert raised by a wireless message - heads the top ten list.
