A driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the B2112 at Wivelsfield on Saturday.
The 45-year-old Brighton man was driving a blue Vauxhall Cavalier when it collided with a white Ford box van, driven by a man from Worthing, at about 6.20am.
The crash happened near the Royal Oak pub at Wivelsfield.
The van driver received slight injuries but the Brighton man was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital with serious injuries.
Firefighters had to rescue a horse which had got trapped in a gate.
The animal caught one of its rear legs in the gate in Lockwood Road in Rudgwick, near Horsham, at 8.45am on Saturday.
Crews from Billingshurst and Storrington, and a heavy rescue unit from Crawley, used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the horse by 9.20am.
A West Sussex fire brigade spokesman said: "The horse seemed fine afterwards."
