I was, naturally, disappointed to read the engineering report saying severe storms could lead to parts of the West Pier collapsing (The Argus, December 19). To me, this indicates just how important it is that restoration work should begin as soon as possible.

I realise there is still opposition from some local conservationists to what is proposed in the way of shoreline development and know their objections are sincere, unlike the hypocrisy being shown by the owners of the Palace Pier.

But time really is running out and the likes of Save Our Seafront would not want the West Pier to become effectively unrestorable as a result of all the delays. For, let's face it, Hemsley Orrell has now given us concrete evidence this is

a real possibility.

I appeal to all those concerned to drop their objections, enabling Brighton and Hove City Council to give planning permission and then work to begin.

Let us not forget that a rejuvenated West Pier will be an attraction not only to locals but also to millions all over the country.
