A childminder looks set to get permission to turn her home into a nursery school despite objections from neighbours.

Plans have been submitted for an extension to a house in The Burrells, Shoreham, for a nursery for up to 15 children.

It would be open from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 6pm, and would cater for children between the ages of 18 months and five years.

Critics say the nursery would be a noise nuisance and parents would cause traffic problems as they dropped off and collected their children.

Among those who have sent letters of objection to Adur District Council are the Shoreham Society and the Shoreham Beach Residents' Association.

But the childminder said in a statement that she already looked after four pre-school children and sometimes as many as eight.

She said the front lawn was being turned into a drop-off and pick-up area for parents and the times parents dropped off and collected their children could be staggered.

Shrubs and extra fencing would be installed in the back garden to reduce additional noise and a two-hour limit would be put on children playing in the garden.

Councillors on the planning and regulatory committee, who are due to discuss the plans on Monday, are being urged to grant temporary permission.

A report to councillors says: "Although the extension would be permanent, its use as a day nursery should only be granted a temporary permission, in order to allow time for the nursery to establish itself and its impact on the residential environment to be monitored and assessed."
