A Sussex MP has joined a 93,000-strong protest against euthanasia.

Eastbourne MP Nigel Waterson has voiced his support for a campaign organised by the Right to Life group.

The organisation handed over a petition with 93,000 signatures to MPs earlier this month.

Conservative MP Mr Waterson said: "One of the tragedies in the present fight is caused by some of those supporting euthanasia who overstate their case.

"They claim that all they want is the choice to enable people to die how and when they please. Yet they present a case giving no real choice and instead, give the impression that either cancer sufferers die in agony or choose euthanasia; or that motor neurone disease patients will die in unrelieved pain by choking and suffocating unless they choose euthanasia.

"Both concepts bear no truth in relation to modern medicine and hospice care. Surely the answer to euthanasia for a compassionate and civilised society rests with the development of our hospice movement, which is the finest in the world and which gives patients a real dignity when dying."
