Six schools are to receive more than £100,000 to run breakfast clubs aimed at helping pupils start the day in a healthy way.

The money will be divided between five primary schools and one secondary school where the clubs, which will open before school hours, will offer healthy food and a place to do homework.

Cash has been provided by eb4u (east brighton for you), the Government scheme which is regenerating East Brighton over a ten-year period with the help of £47.2 million.

The breakfast clubs will be funded for three years with each of the five primary schools receiving £16,295 and the secondary school £28,845.

Schools to benefit are Moulsecoomb Primary, Whitehawk Primary, St Mark's Primary in Whitehawk, Coldean Primary, Bevendean Primary School and Falmer High School.

The clubs offer a safe environment for children and ensure they are not left alone when their parents go to work.

Bethan Christie, appraisal and monitoring assistant with eb4u, said: "The club offers them a healthy cereal, which aids concentration, and those which have already started have been really successful and well attended and that's why we wanted to develop them."
