Drivers face disruption due to work on a road safety scheme in Newhaven.
Speed cushions, a pedestrian crossing point and five bus stops are being installed at Gibbon Road.
The project is a partnership between East Sussex County Council, Lewes District Council, Newhaven Community Development Association and the transport charity, Sustrans.
The work started on Monday and will take about eight weeks to complete.
Drivers may face some delays and are warned the road may be closed for several days, with diversions in place.
Councillor Tony Reid, county council member for transport and the environment said: "For some time there have been requests for traffic calming in Gibbon Road, particularly related to local concerns about vehicle speeds and the number of children using the road.
"These measures are intended to ensure drivers reduce their speeds and, in combination with other traffic management measures, to make it safer for all road users.
"In particular, there will be improved and safer pedestrian facilities which will assist children going to and from Tideway School."
