Following Brett Wells's comments on the proposed tower block for the Endeavour garage site in Preston Road (Letters, December 27), the history of this site may be of some interest.
Originally, it was a Roman temple or villa, discovered in 1872. During the late Forties and early Fifties, I lived as a child above the original garage on the site, called Hartley & Midgely.
On returning later in life to see the building again, I was disappointed to find it had been completely rebuilt (I believe in 1962) as a modern garage - Endeavour Motors.
As for the new plans ... well, I have no comment.
