So, let me get this right. Voice of The Argus ("Bigger mess yet to come", January 8) dismisses Newhaven and Shoreham Harbour as unsuitable potential sites for Southern Water's plans for a sewage-treatment plant on the grounds they are too far-flung but offers no justification of why the two Sheepcoate Valley sites and the one at Ovingdean are the most likely contenders.

It is unfortunate that, when such contentious planning proposals are announced, planners are influenced by who shouts loudest - usually the articulate middle classes who know how to work the system to influence the right people.

Such a situation is not helped by the comments expressed in The Argus.

The treatment of sewage is an industrial process and, as such, it is appropriate such processing is dealt with on a site designated for industrial use.

Sheepcote Valley is an area of great value to flora, fauna and human recreation not far from residential accommodation.

Both Newhaven and Shoreham Harbour are industrial sites. Surely either is a more logical alternative than Sheepcote Valley or Ovingdean?
