Former Scotland international Robert Fleck stands between Withdean and their FA Vase dream.

Fleck enjoyed a successful career with Rangers, Norwich and Chelsea and played for Scotland at Italia 90.

These days the 37-year-old is manager of Jewson Eastern Counties League side Diss Town who face Withdean at Worthing in the fourth round of the FA Vase tomorrow.

The Vase is a million miles away from the World Cup and Woodside Road has no comparison to the San Siro but the excitement Fleck gets from the game has not diminished over the past 12 years.

Fleck said: "Management? I love it. I have done it for a couple of years now. Things went well at Gorleston and I moved on to Diss last summer.

"It is great. It is good fun and we have got an honest bunch of lads here.

"We are quite a reasonable young team. We are coming down on Friday and it should be an exciting cup tie."

Norwich, where Fleck enjoyed some particularly happy times, have a reputation for playing good football and the Scot has taken that into management.

Fleck, who still turns out occasionally, said: "We try to play football. That is what I have been brought up with and that is what I believe in, rather than just humping the ball.

"It was difficult to begin with but we gave the players a chance and they have succeeded.

"Our first priority is the league but we are not going to win that this year. Our second priority is the cups and we are going well in them. We have reached the semi final of a local cup and the Vase has been good for us as a club in the past.

"Like Withdean, we are in the last 32 and you start to see there is light at the end of the tunnel."

Diss, who won the Vase in 1995, are only halfway up their league but have won eight of their last nine nine games.

One of their main strikers, Coren Hardy, may have to miss the game. Hardy is an inmate at Norwich Prison but is let out for matches. However, the distance to from Norfolk to Sussex may prevent him from travelling.

Andy Key has 19 goals this season and Mattie Joynson, a former Norwich apprentice, is a right-winger to be looked out for.

Withdean have a doubt over midfielder Damion Dobbyn. Manager Peter Edwards said: "It should be a good game. If we reach the level we can, we should get the result we are after."
