Brighton and Hove has one of Britain's liveliest city centres, with a huge number of clubs, restaurants and bars.

Its centre is also home to thousands of people, which can create conflict.

People who choose to live where the action is in parts of Kemp Town, The Lanes and the seafront have to accept there will be a certain amount of noise.

But there should be a balance, which is why the Kingscliffe Society is opposing plans to open pubs 24 hours a day.

The society is not full of killjoys who want nothing to move after 7pm. They welcome evening events and later opening of shops.

But they are concerned at the impact on their neighbourhood if large clubs are allowed to open all night.

Already in Brighton, the sensible decision has been taken to put most of the late night drinking venues away from homes.

If 24-hour opening comes about, even more care will have to be taken so that people are not kept awake all night.
