A military dummy which has stood sentry outside an army surplus shop for 15 years has gone absent without leave - and left its partner in the lurch.

Paul Bruton spent the weekend hunting for the missing-in-action model, which disappeared from his shop in New England Road, Brighton, on Friday.

The 5ft 8in dummy is dressed in full army clothing, including a green jacket, rubber boots and woollen gloves.

Mr Bruton said the mannequin was well known to passers-by and of great sentimental value.

He fears somebody could mistake it for rubbish and is asking for people to keep an eye out for it in the streets, gardens and bins.

Mr Bruton reported the missing dummy to the police.

He said: "The dummies are local characters and are quite well-known. I think the other one is pretty upset. It looks a bit down in the mouth."

Anyone who finds the dummy is asked to call Mr Burton on 01273 671919.
