The Royal York Buildings in Brighton would be a treat for visitors and residents alike were it to be returned to use as a very special hotel, restored to provide the style, ambience and decor it had when converted from houses to a 100-bed hotel in 1819.
Imagine sleeping in beds of the era with rugs and draperies to match, with a sense of time travelling for your money over and above a bed for the night.
It is something I experienced when visiting Shanghai, a veritable Twenties' movie set, some years ago.
Sadly, on present form, all we can expect from a vulgar and crass Brighton and Hove City Council is sale to a developer.
