Police and community workers toured an estate hours after a young man was stabbed and left to die.
They were attempting to piece together the shattered community.
Councillors and senior police expressed sadness and offered their condolences to relatives but reassured residents that overall crime on the estate had fallen dramatically.
Detectives were continuing to question a man, 33, in connection with the death following a fight in Birdham Road, Brighton, on Thursday night.
Ward councillors and senior police walked the streets of Moulsecoomb and chatted to residents on Friday.
Inspector Steve Curry said: "This was shocking news but we must not lose sight of all the encouraging work that is being undertaken."
Martin Bailey, a Community Safety Team leader, said crime on the estate had fallen by a quarter in the past two years.
He said: "Much of the success has been down to police, the community and Brighton and Hove City Council working together."
Mr Bailey said the introduction of CCTV helped people feel safer.
Councillor Francis Tonks said: "What happened here on Thursday was dreadful and our thoughts are with the families involved but it must be remembered that so much good work has been carried out in Moulsecoomb in the past two years."
Councillor Jack Hazelgrove said: "I am sure the shocking incident will not undermine all the positive things that are happening on the estate."
All community wardens were out in Moulsecoomb on Friday to reassure residents.
