Simon Fanshawe is quite right. Selma Montford's zeal is entirely admirable, her concept of Brighton and Hove fatally flawed.
Was the Pavilion "properly designed for its location"? Can any style in Brighton other than Regency pass the Montford test?
We all suffer from the collapse of the planning process. To borrow an excellent phrase from another of your correspondents, our "frighteningly ineffectual" council has long since abandoned any leadership role and every new building is at the mercy of the last objector left standing.
The only partial solution I can see is for protesters to be obliged to set out precisely what they would do instead.
Otherwise, there can be no rational debate about alternatives, simply an increasingly raucous dialogue of the deaf.
