Crawley's caretaker manager Francis Vines criticised his side's "lacklustre" performance after they were beaten 2-0 at Weymouth in the premier division.
He said: "This was like one of the performances under Billy Smith before he left. It was lacklustre.
"We should have put at least one of our chances away and after Weymouth scored we didn't tackle or pass well."
Reds looked the stronger side for the first half hour. Kevin Hemsley went close on three occasions, Stewart Holmes forced a save from Jason Matthews while Mo Harkin had two efforts from long range.
Weymouth began to look dangerous on the break and took the lead after 40 minutes. Martyn Sullivan pounced upon a half-clearance by goalkeeper Andy Little before firing home with his left foot.
Weymouth's Lee Phillips had a goal disallowed before half-time and Crawley seldom threatened after the break.
Their only chance came for substitute Danny Hockton who had a 61st minute shot cleared off the goalline by a defender.
But by that time Phillips had added Weymouth's second goal when he cut inside Marc Pullan before firing past Little.
Meanwhile, Margate boss Chris Kinnear has ruled himself out of the running to succeed Smith after signing a three-year contract.
