Perhaps it would be more realistic if Lewes District Council renamed the project Newhaven Traffic Chaos.
While it is admirable the council wishes to see an upturn in the fortunes of Newhaven's unattractive centre by encouraging people to walk to the shops, the truth of the matter is that prospective shoppers already have two subways and four pedestrian crossings should they wish to use them.
Traffic on the A259 has no such choice in traversing the one-way system. The current scheme claims to offer improvements to both safety and the environment.
Perhaps the council could explain how this is achieved by having an extra mile-and-a-half of standing traffic, full of drivers whose only aim is to get out of this newly created disaster area as quickly as possible.
Newhaven is a busy industrial town that relies on this road to make its money.
If the new traffic system remains in place, the areas in which business is still thriving may soon come to resemble the dilapidated shopping centre that has suddenly become so important.
