Ben Roberts has played his last match for Albion after boss Steve Coppell reluctantly decided not to extend the Charlton goalkeeper's loan deal.

Coppell revealed today: "Ben has gone back, the main reason being the vulnerability of his loan. Alan Curbishley can call him back at any time, even on a Friday afternoon.

"Ben is bitterly disappointed and I can understand that but I had to do something. Managers live and die by decisions like this. I am pleased I have got a positive option in Dave Beasant."

Roberts was drafted in as cover for Michel Kuipers when Albion's Dutch No.1 pulled a thigh muscle.

Roberts was then ruled out himself by gastric flu, so Coppell signed 43-year-old Beasant on a short-term contract from Wigan for the rest of the season.

Roberts completed his loan stint with another vital save in Saturday's 1-0 triumph at Bradford, which has eased the Seagulls out of the bottom two for the first time since September.

He made a brilliant stop from Ashley Ward's goalbound header early on to add to inspirational performances in the 1-1 home draw against leaders Portsmouth and the 4-1 home win over Wolves.

Coppell said: "It's a shame the way it has gone because Ben has made a significant contribution. The plan was for him to come here and play games and then he got his illness.

"He has been fabulous in all three games. He has made some good saves and he has been a delight around the club. If any other manager phoned up about him I would give him a glowing reference."

Beasant has been suffering from a similar illness to Roberts but he is on the road to recovery and will return between the posts against Millwall at Withdean on Saturday.
