There is no doubt James Galway is still the master of the flute, proved by some dazzling playing alongside the nearly legendary London Mozart Players.
But he did have a close rival: His wife Jeanne. The pair gave a magical reading of Cimarosa's Concerto In G Major.
Both had golden flutes. Hers was a little warmer to offset his sharper instrument and both made them whistle beautifully.
He was very much the Irish leprechaun, complete with mischievous smile with left foot forward busy keeping time. He played as though no effort at all was needed.
The Cimarosa piece and his second solo of Carl Stamitz's Flute Concerto in G Major both came from the same period as Mozart and both were haunting pieces.
Galway certainly knew his Mozart - he was also the conductor in Mozart's Prague Symphony and an Haydn's Philosopher Symphony - leading with energy and great flair.
Galway was happy to play encores but I was not, at first, eager to hear him play Danny Boy.
However, he won me over within a few bars. It was done with great flair and tremendous beauty.
