It's easy for patients to think of the NHS as being staffed mainly by doctors and nurses because these are the people they are most likely to meet.
But there are many other men and women working for the biggest employer in western Europe who perform equally vital jobs.
Today The Argus highlights the work undertaken in Brighton and Hove by medical photographer Nick White.
His work can be extremely important in detecting what is wrong with patients or in keeping a record of their progress.
But there are many more unsung heroes in the NHS such as physios, radiographers, scientists, porters and cleaners. Without them the service would stumble and falter.
The NHS is launching a campaign to recruit more staff and there are shortages in many of these jobs. People who fill them will do work which generally is greatly rewarding.
