Sussex have reported a deficit of £12,522 in their latest accounts, the club's first loss since 1998.
An unexpected reduction in the ECB's perimeter advertising payments to the non-Test match grounds accounted for the loss which was notified two months after the end of their financial year.
But for that late adjustment the county would have reported a small surplus.
The loss is not cause for concern as Sussex are the major beneficiaries of the will of former club president Spen Cama whose legacy is thought to be around £4 million. although the club do not expect to receive funds until later this year.
There was an increase of £141,593 in players' salaries to £1.19m. Treasurer David Stoner said: "It's a fact of life that if we are to survive in Division 1 we must renumerate the players accordingly."
