The Brighton and Hove City Council web site has been praised as part of a national review.
The SOCITM (Society of Information Technology Management), one of the main professional bodies for the IT industry, has published its Better Connected review of local authority web sites.
The council's site was in the top eight unitary authority sites, of which there are 46 in total.
It was also listed as an example of good practice for accessibility, scoring 12 out of a possible 15.
Ten sites were rated "fully transactional" - the top ranking.
Although the council's site did not meet this standard, it was one of eight that almost made the grade.
The council was rated on its old site but a revamped and improved site has just been launched.
