It is with disbelief I hear one of Brighton's most popular pubs is to close.
I refer to the historic Quadrant Freehouse at the Clock Tower. The landlord of this friendly pub has built up the business so it caters for a variety of tastes. It has an ever-changing selection of real ales, Belgian beers on tap - including exclusive tipples such as the Kriek cherry beer - an array of Belgian bottles and you can still get the coolest pint of Stella, Amstel, Guinness or whatever in the city plus the usual spirits and wines. The service is provided by a charming and helpful staff. So, all of this is to go - for what? Yet another cafe-bar. Unbelievable.
Of course, when the pub closes, the building will remain empty for a year while the development takes shape. What a fine impression for the city's summer visitors. What a waste. What a shame.
