Once again, Southern FM is dumping one of its popular presenters. Ambrose Harcourt is one of the original DJs with a great, smooth presenting style.
His loss to the station will make Southern FM sound like any other radio station in the area.
The bigger picture in today's radio sees big regional stations conforming to a format which means listeners are devoid of choice. Southern FM is part of the Capital Network. More and more programmes are broadcast all over the Capital Network, making stations such as Southern FM sound the same and bland.
Unfortunately, Ambrose's programme doesn't fit into Southern FM's style of constant bland teen-pop but the programme was well listened to. More than 1,000 calls on St Valentine's night proves he is very popular.
Radio stations in the 21st Century (apart from the BBC) are money-making machines where advertisers seem to rule the airwaves. If a programme has a loyal following but doesn't top the listener figures, advertisers won't advertise during that programme and, eventually, the programme controllers will bow to the money men.
I hope Ambrose finds another station in the near future. Southern FM is once again making a mistake. The Sussex listener is being deprived of choice.
