There have been predictably negative reactions from many people in Hove to the three schemes for redeveloping the King Alfred site on Hove seafront.
Although some of the best architects in the world have been involved in preparing these schemes, nothing would persuade objectors to have bold and exciting architecture there.
They do not seem to realise the flats are necessary to fund the new £30 million sports centre, which should be the best in the South. They will not only form a landmark development but will provide homes for about 160 families in housing need.
Without this scheme, the city is destined to be stuck with the existing King Alfred, which is crumbling and costs £500,000 a year in subsidy. It was never beautiful and the swimming pools tacked on in the Eighties are exceptionally ugly.
Yet it seems many people would rather be stuck with these unattractive, dated buildings than have a new development which could be the pride of the city.
