A new controlled parking scheme for the Goldsmid area of Hove began operating today, amid criticism from some local businesses.

Councillors say it will allow more residents to park near their homes.

But Ann Hawkins, who runs St Catherine's Lodge Rest Home on Silverdale Avenue with her husband Tony, said: "I am fuming.

"Why should my staff have to pay to come into work? Some of them may decide to leave because of this."

The parking restrictions could also affect those being cared for at the home.

Mrs Hawkins said: "When visitors come they have to park as well and it could stop them coming too. They are not giving anyone a chance.

"There should be parking bays for staff and visitors only. It's all wrong."

Residents living nearby but outside the zone fear parking problems will spread as drivers try to avoid the charges.

Conservative city councillor Brian Rowe, who represents neighbouring Stanford ward, said: "It's a creeping process really. The problem will spread into Stanford and we already have a lack of spaces because of visitors to the rugby club."

Coun Rowe said his party would have a "serious look" at parking if it took power in May's local elections.

Supporters of the various controlled parking schemes across the city are adamant they are what residents want.

Councillor Simon Battle, the council's transport spokesman, said: "We have aimed to balance the needs of all sections of the community in Goldsmid, giving priority to residents and short-term parking.

"The council is committed to reviewing the scheme by the end of the year, which will give us the opportunity to make adjustments where necessary to make improvements."
