Mrs Young is guilty of scaremongering about proposals for a small park-and-ride site for Brighton and Hove Albion in Carden Avenue.

I was also stunned to hear Tory Councillor Brian Pidgeon say "the Albion do not care about residents and the community" in Brighton and Hove City Council environment committee last Thursday.

The facility would cause minor disruption on a handful of days and evenings a year. In transport terms, access to the Hollingbury industrial estate and the A27 roundabout would remain.

It is a small price to pay in allowing the football club to introduce 2,000 extra seats at Withdean from next season.

This will mean non-season ticket-holders and casual fans stand a chance of getting a ticket to see the Seagulls in future years. This fan-base needs to be built and maintained until the move to a permanent home at Falmer takes place.

Many people who lived near the Goldstone ground for years, including me, will hardly recognise the picture of chaos apparently about to be inflicted on residents near Carden Avenue. And that was in the days of 20,000 gates.
