The proposed tower blocks on Hove seafront would make a dramatic architectural statement but what of their environmental effects?
Tall buildings can give rise to severe wind effects on the lee side. Where the site is already exposed - for example, on the seafront - these are potentially damaging and hazardous to people and vehicles at ground level. This is no scaremongering. In 1965, a group of cooling towers at Ferrybridge power station, in Yorkshire, were blown down in high winds.
Before plans are too far advanced, someone needs to build a model of the proposed tower blocks on Hove seafront and test it in a wind tunnel to see what the effects of the scheme would be.
