I was most pleased to see the Government had common sense in allowing Brighton's West Pier refurbishment to go ahead.
Let us hope the same happens with Falmer.
Recently, I saw the front-page article about the King Alfred redevelopment (The Argus, March 7) and thought, oh, no, here we go again. It wasn't the designs, which I thought were fabulous, but that The Argus would be full again of the letters from small-minded architectural Luddites. Sure enough, come Wednesday, March 12, the letters page was full of them.
Oh, dear, there is not a Regency door or cornice to be seen. Condemn the schemes out of hand. I have been lucky to have been born and lived in the city all my life in properties ranging from flats to a Regency terrace house to a modern bungalow and loved them all. It is the diversity that makes a great city.
Take Paris, which everyone agrees is beautiful and historic. Half the inhabitants of Brighton and Hove would never have allowed the Eiffel Tower, La Defense, the Louvre pyramid or the Pompidou Centre yet they now enhance that city and are great tourist attractions in themselves.
Finally, Trevor Pateman's letter really amazed me. Sir, have you never heard of Monte Carlo, the ultimate high-rise, wealthy coastal city? Hardly the setting for the poor of Europe.
