Council chiefs have warned against letting Shoreham Airport expand too much and ruin the lives of nearby residents.
The Argus has reported how consultants have started drawing up proposals which would involve many more flights to and from the airport.
But West Sussex County Council is concerned about the possible effects on people in nearby Lancing and Shoreham.
A government report suggested the airport, until now rarely used for commercial flights, could take up to 500,000 passengers a year.
However, Councillor Tex Pemberton, Cabinet member for strategic environmental services, said: "A balance needs to be struck between the environment and the economy."
