This week finds super heroes in town alongside those lovely people from Hed Kandi and former Brighton based chart-toppers Phats and Small.
EVERY DAY PEOPLE, The Escape, Marine Parade, Brighton, March 29 I have very fond but alcohol-induced memories of Phats and Small. I remember dancing (badly) far too many times to their 1999 smash Turn Around back in the days when I thought London was the place to be (silly me). It was around that time I thought a good night out could be purchased by drinking every flavour of Bacardi Breezer until I fell over. My taste in drinks has changed but I still enjoy a big chunk of Phats and a little bit of Small. Since moving to Brighton, I've seen them DJ a few times and their brand of mutant disco has impressed me on each and every occasion. It certainly doesn't hurt that they've been DJing down here for years. A fair few DJs arrive in Brighton with a record box "on rails" and, when the crowd doesn't respond as expected, they're left high and dry and the crowd anything but lowdown and dirty. That's certainly not the case with these guys.enjoy. It runs from 10pm to 3am. Admission is £8/7.
MARGOT'S SUPERHEROES PARTY, Hanbury Ballroom, Brighton, March 29 It's superhero time at Margot's so prepare that Spandex, Lycra or rubber and get ready to go public with your amazing dancing powers. DJs Albino Priest (Lo-Fi Allstars), Space Raiders and Diamante will be providing sound effects. Margot's is always a bit debauched and this time should be no different ... just make sure you don't reveal your secret identity or there could be hell to pay. It runs from 10pm to 2am. Admission is £10 (£8 before 10.30pm). 01273 605789 LOVEBUG, Casablanca, Middle Street, Brighton, Fridays One of my mates reckons I'm pretentious because I keep banging on about posh clubs. He says I fail to mention places like Casablanca where I've spent many a happy evening on the floor (in more ways than one). Almost everyone who lives in Brighton ends up at Casablanca at least once in their life. Lovebug is a good place to start your Casablanca experience and DJs Alec, Brother J and G-Force will be there. The night runs from 9pm to 2am. Admission is £4/5 before 11pm and £5/6 thereafter.
HED KANDI, Honeyclub, King's Road Arches, Brighton, March 28 It's the last Friday of the month, which means its Hed Kandi at the Honeyclub. The label has been gathering a wave of popularity since launching and this should be a good opportunity to find out why. The reasons for its success are no big secret - it's just good music played well. Local hero Johnny Nicely will be going "Back to Love" in the second room for those of you who prefer to worship the music that helped build house. The night runs from 10pm to 3am. Admission is £10.
ALL ELECTRIC, SUMO, Middle Street, Brighton, Thursdays If you're free this Thursday and fancy a bit of live music and some good mixing and you don't want to pay an entrance fee, you might want to head for All Electric at Sumo. Stompaphunk band signing Mula will be playing a live set. DJ support will come from Stompaphunk mainstay Void and Mula's Senor Mick. Musical policy is anything funky. 9pm to 1am. 01273 749465.
