I am somewhat confused by Ray Hatley's request (The Argus Technology, March 25) that we "think what fun it would be to give a new product a sensible name that describes what it does. Like carpet sweeper or hot water bottle."

A "computer" is called a computer because it "computes".

To go into more detail about "computes" would lead us into exactly the kind of jargon Mr Hatley abhors.

If, on the other hand, we named a computer for what it "could" do, the name would go on for page after page after page.

So, maybe "computer" is the best description after all?
