A "Promenade to Health" will be unveiled by the Mayor of Worthing this month.
Workmen have marked out a route of almost five miles along the town's seafront so walkers know how far they have travelled.
It runs from Brooklands recreation ground in East Worthing to Sea Lane, Ferring.
The promenade is designed to encourage walking among the public as part of a keep-fit initiative. Each mile is marked so people know how far they have gone.
The scheme has been promoted by The Countryside Agency and the British Heart Foundation while funding has been provided by the National Lottery New Opportunities Fund and Kia Motors.
Worthing Borough Council's Walking to Health scheme has groups in Durrington, Broadwater and Heene.
On April 16, the Mayor, Councillor Eric Mardell, will lead a group of about 50 walkers from Goring greensward to the beach office near the Lido, to be followed by a buffet lunch.
